2012: A new year and a new beginning for Pakistani Cinema.
The producers of Tamanna, a ‘New Lollywood’ independent movie due in 2012 release the first song/video of Koi Dil Mein sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan containing both shots from the movie and of Rahat and band. The video contains special footage from the film in a mise en abyme technique as the scene from the film represents a special type of flashback with actual scenes from an old film made by one of the main characters who is a ‘Lollywood Golden Age’ director. This song marks the collaboration of the team with Tradition Plus, a music company formed by well-known Pakistani cultural icon Mian Yousuf Salahudin, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and music composer Sahir Ali.
Commenting on the first formal music collaboration with the film, Mian Yousuf Salahudin said that films like Tamanna should be made; and that Pakistani films should touch upon reality than just repeating the usual formula. He further explained that the film has a strong caste with veteran actors and that he has high expectations with the film. Commenting over audience expectations and film viewing, Yousuf Sallahudin explained that at times films have to train the viewers and quoted examples of a new trend in Indian cinema of low budget films providing quality and meaningful entertainment. British director Steven Moore said that it was a genuine pleasure to work with Rahat Fateh and looks forward to working with him. Commenting on his interest in working on a film narrative in Pakistan, Moore said that he had always been a fan of the lateNusrat Fateh Ali Khan whose name in the West was synonymous with music from the East, and believes that changing worldly perception rests on fashioning narratives evolving from a country’s culture, music and heritage as from its political history.
